The easternmost province of Andalucia is a dry region with great expanses of rocky semidesert.
Because
of this, it was often chosen in the 1960s and '70s to shoot Westerns
(known as spaghetti westerns and including films such as The Good, the Bad and the Ugly or The Magnificent Seven).
The
movie industry left behind three Wild West town sets which are now
tourist attractions: the most popular, about 25 kilometres (15 miles)
from Almería, is called Mini Hollywood and visitors can watch banks
being robbed or cowboys exchanging blows at the saloon.
The province's capital, Almería, is proud of its colossal Alcazaba, founded in 995 and the biggest built by the Moors in Spain.
Another huge monument is the Cathedral (16th century) which looks more like a fortress with its six towers and thick walls.
Almería
is a lively port city with a curious old quarter of gypsies and
fishermen called La Chanca, where some families still live in grottoes
with a colourful outside but quite modern inside.
The Natural Park of Cabo de Gata covers a region of cliffs of volcanic rock, dunes, long sand stretches and sheltered coves.
It
is a beautiful and unspoilt place with tiny fishermen's villages, a
small holiday resort (San José), salted lagoons with flamingos and
thousands of other migratory birds, and awesome cliffs leading to the
cape's tip at Faro de Cabo de Gata, where a lighthouse stands.
To
the northeast, Mojácar is a small town of white Moorish houses
surrounded by beaches which, despite having been discovered by tourism
in the 1960s, remains quite picturesque.
Almería is
naturally an excellent zone to eat fresh fish and shellfish, but there
are other local dishes worth trying, such as the trigo a la cortijera (with wheat grains, meat and sausages). | | | |
