Cadiz isn't usually a
destination included by tourists in their holiday plans but this is
perhaps unfair, as it is an historic port and boasts of being Europe's
oldest city (probably founded in 1100 BC by the Phoenicians).
Although
its former grandeur belongs to the past, tourists will enjoy visiting
the pleasant marginal road bordered by gardens, the narrow streets of
the old town, the Baroque and Neo-classical Cathedral or the Torre
Tavira, an old watchtower from the 18th century offering superb views
and where images of the city are projected on a screen at the cámara oscura (dark chamber).
Cadiz
is also famous for its explosive Carnival, ten whole days of vibrant
merry-making, singing, dancing, drinking and dressing-up.
To
the north, the beautiful hills of the Sierra de Grazalema offer the
greenest woodlands and valleys, remote villages and white towns rising
in often dramatic sceneries.
To the south, the Coast of
Light (Costa de la Luz) has still unspoiled beaches bathed by Atlantic
waters and small resorts such as Los Caños de Meca and Zahara de los
Atunes.
The province also harbours the capital of sherry, Jerez de la Frontera, where tourists can visit the bodegas (wineries) and taste the famous drink made from grapes grown on the zone's chalky soil.
Jerez,
however, has other reasons to be a proud town: it is home to the Royal
Andalucian School of Equestrian Art (where visitors can watch beautiful
horses and riders in dressage train every morning) and to the
Andalucian Flamenco Centre, for it is equally one of the birthplaces of
the vibrant gypsy music and dancing.
The drab
industrial town of Algeciras is unlikely to attract anyone on the way
to Gibraltar, the rocky islet which caused so much trouble between
Madrid and London since it became a British colony in 1713.
Besides
the Gibraltar Museum, portraying the history of The Rock, and the
possibility of dolphin-watching on daily excursions by boat, the main
attraction is another colony: that of the tailless monkeys, near the
lighthouse and the shrine of Our Lady at Europa Point; according to
legend, the British will remain at Gibraltar as long as the apes are
there. | | | |
